Helen Downie, beter known as the Unskilled Worker was discovered by the celebrated photographer Nick Knight in 2014, the artist was invited by SHOWstudio to work on a collection of specially commissioned portraits of Alexander McQueen’s most pivotal designs. Her drawings were the subject of an acclaimed exhibition launched to coincide with the opening of McQueen’s ‘Savage Beauty’ show at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
In 2015, the artist was invited by the Italian fashion house Gucci to make a series of portraits inspired by the work of Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele. This collection was the subject of an exhibition at the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai, alongside the work of Rachel Feinstein, Jenny Holzer, Glen Luchford, Nigel Shafran and others.
Her style is highly atmospheric and infused with a dreamy childlike innocence that alludes to darker times. Love the eyes!
