10 questions with Maria Veronica
This friday we are interviewing the very talented London-based fashion illustrator Maria Veronica. She collaborated with Make-up artist Pat McGrath on the Beauty looks from Paris Fashion Week Ready-to-Wear Spring 2018. We are excited to show them here!
Hi Maria Veronica, great to have you here!
1. Tell us something about yourself.
My name is Maria Veronica and I am a self-taught fashion illustrator. I was born in Russia, raised in Cyprus and moved to London 4 years ago to pursue my dream!
2. How did you get started as an illustrator?
Growing up I was always interested in all things creative. My first unintentional fashion illustrations were actually sketches for moodboards I would make for my fashion photography. Back then I didn't know what fashion illustration was, I just loved drawing weird girls wearing my favourite designer pieces. I then realised illustration was a more suitable medium for me than photography.
3. How would you describe your style? What’s your technical process?
I love creating interesting characters, my style is developing and changing all the time, lately I'm into more surreal worlds and would love to dive in more into that. Currently I am exploring the digital world, I moved to digital exactly one year ago and I absolutely love it!
4. What do you love most about your job?
Art is an escape for me. These days I need it more than ever!
5. Who or what inspires you and your work?
I really can get inspired by the most random things at the most random places but what always inspired me, and this might sound cliche, is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, I love her and her curiosity. I even have Sir John Tenniel's classic Alice tattooed on my arm!
6. Which brands do you work for or do you love to work for?
I am currently working on a project with Pat McGrath which is so exciting, she is such an inspiration! I interpreted all her beauty looks for Ready-to-Wear Spring 2018.
7. What is your favorite thing in the world to illustrate?
Girls with odd features and attitude.
8. What’s your dream project?
I would love to bring my girls to life and create a fashion animation. I made some short ones to test out the process, it is very time consuming but the result is so rewarding!
9. What 3 things can't you live without?
My iPadPro is always with me, a hairbrush because my hair has life of it's own and good music!
10. Any words of wisdom to aspiring artists?
If you are anything like me, stop overthinking! Just draw, practise, experiment, don’t be to hard on yourself and share your work with the world!
